kernels of hope

beneath an azure sky

stippled with clouds,

grey, white,

puffy, flat,

floating along their way,

stratified across the plains,

hiding finally behind distant blue mountains,

a cornfield undulates.

brown and green,

slowly dying yet enticingly pregnant,

fighting to give birth to

treasured kernels of hope

before death claims her completely.

dried stalks strike alabaster skin

as my feet run along the ground beneath

into which the stalks dive deeply,

feeding as they will,

dependent on the nutrients to live.

i fall to fertile ground, crushing

stalks as i tumble.

there i lie,

staring past enticingly pregnant stalks

desperate to give birth to kernels of hope

toward clouds desperate to give birth

to swells and swells of life-giving rain.
